The NFL has really needed a guy that the country could really rally behind… Enter Gardner Minshew..  A kid who was undrafted out of high school, went to community college, to finally sign to play for East Carolina.. After transferring to Washington State he leads the FBS in passing yards and finishes the year 5th in the Heisman voting..

Just the opening paragraph is enough to make you go “Wow”, very impressive.. It gets even better.  The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Gardner Minshew in the 6th round, with very little chance that he would see the field.  After performing well in preseason, he makes the team but still the newly signed Nick Foles is highly paid, and definitely who the QB who would lead the Jaguars.

Nick Foles suffered a broken clavicle in the opening game of the season and the Jaguars hopes were already dashed before they began.  Gardner Minshew II enters the game against the mighty Patriots and performed rather well.. The game was out of hand and th Patriots did crush the Jaguars, but there was reason for hope.  The kid played really well!

During week two, Gardner Minshew stepped up his game even more and had the Jaguars in the game against the Texans he once again performed well.. The Texans did win 13-12 in nail biting fashion, but the Gardner Minshew mania began to grow further.. Minshew passed for over 200 yards, threw two touchdown passes, and zero interceptions for a 108 passer rating.  Only a failed 2 point conversion kept the Jaguars away from winning this game.

Game three was on Thursday night, and available to watch nationwide on the NFL Network..  Minshew did not disappoint.  The Jaguars won 20-7 over the Tennessee Titans and Gardner Minshew became the first rookie Jaguars QB to throw for over 600 yards during the first 3 weeks of the season.. In fact, Minshew has thrown for 5 TDs and only 1 interception.

After only a few weeks in the NFL, Gardner Minshew Jerseys are flying up the charts on top selling list!  He is up there with Hall of Fame QB’s like Tom Brady and Drew Brees in terms of jerseys recently sold..  Jaguar fans have a new cult hero, and they dream that his success will continue!  It’s a story that fans hope is only just beginning.

High School Biography

Saquon Barkley went to Whitehall High School, in Whitehall Township, PA.  There he went on to star for his team.. From his sophomore to senior season in high school, he ran for 3,646 yards with 63 touchdowns.  His senior year is when he really made a name for himself on the high school circuit.  During his senior year, Barkley ran for 1,856 yards and 31 touchdowns.  This is when his 4 star recruit status caught the eyes of the top college programs in America.

Barkley first committed to play football for Rutgers University, but then changed to Penn St.

Saquon Barkley College Biography

Barkley was an immediate success story at Penn St.  He got significant playing time as a freshman.  In fact, Barkley ran for 115 years with a TD in only his second game playing for the Nittany Lions.

During his freshman year, Barkley was sidelined for two games due to injury.  He returned with a vengeance.  He gained 194 yards on 26 carries against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were ranked #1 in the nation at the time.  As a freshman, the young budding star rushed for 1,076 yards and 7 Touchdowns.

Sophomore Year Bio at Penn St.

Barkley was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award during his sophomore season.  He was name Big 10 Offensive Player of the year.  In addition to this prestigious aware, he also won the Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year.  Finally, he was named to the first team All-Big Ten team.

In the Big 10 Championship game against the Wisconsin Badgers, Barkley helped lead Penn St. back from a 28-7 deficit to stun Wisconsin in a thriller that fans still talk about till this day.

To end his sophomore season, Saquon Barkley shined in the 2017 Rose Bowl.  he rushed for 194 yards in only 25 carries.  Barkley set a team record for rushing as a sophomore by picking up 1,496 yards on the ground.

Junior Year Biography

During his final year at Penn St. Barkley racked up many more offensive awards.  He was awarded the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week during his very first game by rushing for 172 yards on only 14 carries.  He also scored two touchdowns.

During Barkley’s Big Ten opener, Barkley amassed 358 all purpose yards.  He alone, outgained the entire Iowa Hawkeyes offense.  He ran for 211 yards, caught for 94 yards, and gained 53 kick return yards.  Once again, Barkley was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.

The Penn St. went on to win the 2017 Fiesta Bowl.  Shortly after the Bowl game, Saquon Barkley declared his intentions to enter the NFL draft.

That would probably be the most honorable thing about playing baseball.”

Ohtani has had the fortune of coming from an athletic family.  Ohtani’s father (Toru) played in a high level industrial baseball league that produced Major Leaguer Junichi Tazawa.  His mother was talented badminton player.

Ohtani’s Upbringing :

Ohtani was born out of the limelight of big city..  He was raised on a farm in the town of Oshu.  He grew up surrounded by rice fields rather than the big city lights.  In fact, he was 3 hours north of Tokyo.  Writer, Brad Lefton said that “He’s not a Tokyo city slicker.  That might be part of the reason he’s so admired”. There’s still an innocence to him.”

When Ohtani’s Enormous Talent Caught the Eyes of Scouts

Summer Koshein, a famed Japanese high school tournament is always packed with scouts to see the young stars of tomorrow perform.  This is where Ichiro Suzuki, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Masahiro Tanaka first made waves on the Japanese baseball scene.

While Shohei Ohtani’s team didn’t win Summer Koshien, he still dazzled in the limelight.  He showcased a 99mph (160 kilometers per hour), which set a record for a Japanese high school pitcher.

After High School

After finishing high school, Ohtani had to decide where he would play baseball professionally.  Ohtani had dreams of forgoing playing in Japan and jump straight to the Major Leagues.  However, he decided to sign with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters who drafted him with their #1 pick in 2012.

Nippon-Ham convinced Ohtani that he would instantly be a Japanese star, rather than going through the arduous long bus rides of the Minor Leagues in America.  The appeal of having his family there with him enticed him to stay with his new team in Japan.

The Two Way Star – Wasn’t Always a Star at the Plate

Shohei Ohtani showcased his immense talent immediately as a pitcher.  However, his termed nickname “Japanese Babe Ruth”, didn’t come until later.  This is because his rookie season Ohtani hit a slash line of .238/.284/.376.  Hardly eye popping numbers.  However, as a pitcher he showed a lot of potential for such a young player by going 3-0 with a 4.23 ERA.

The following year is when Ohtani’s offensive potential really began to take off.  At only 19 he hit 10 home runs in only 212 at bats.  His pitching improved as well.  He went 11-4 with a 2.61 ERA with 179 strikeouts in just 155 1/3 innings.

2014 When Ohtani Dazzled U.S. Fans at the Japanese All Star Game

Fans from the United States got their first taste of Ohtani during the 2014 Japanese All Star Team versus the Major League All Stars.  Shoehei Ohtani blew away the MLB stars.  Striking out Yasiel Puig, Justin Morneau, and Evan Longoria to start the game.

After striking out the side in the first inning, Ohtani allowed only 2 runs in 7 innings, while striking out 7 against some of Major League Baseball’s best hitters.

It All Came together in 2016

While Shohei Ohtani was a pitching star from time he put on a Nipp-Ham jersey, his hitting took some time.  In 2016 is when he put the entire package together.  He hit .322/.416/.588 with 22 home runs while pitching to a 1.86 ERA.  He also struck out 174 batters in only 140 innings.  A star was born.  Ohtani went on to become the Paific League MVP while guiding his team to a Japan Series Championship.
